In Cheboygan County, our families, friends and neighbors are struggling financially more today than at any other time in recent memory; many to the point where they must decide between providing food for their family or heat for their home. This should not be.
Five years ago, members of our community established Walk for Warmth (W4W) to correct this travesty. Our first Walk was on a cold northern Michigan Saturday morning in February of 2010. That event not only raised awareness for approximately 85 participants on what it is like to experience cold, it also raised $8,200 to help 36 very needy families realize what it is like to stay warm. Our second year, W4W 2011, was just as successful, raising $12,000 to help 50 families keep their heat on. The third year, W4W 2012, was our most successful campaign to date, raising over $13,800 and helping 68 families stay warm. Then, last year, W4W 2013 (our fourth campaign), we raised just over $11,800 and were able to help 65 more families do the same.
During its first four years, Cheboygan Walk for Warmth raised over $45,800 and helped over 219 families, or approximately 657 individuals ‘Share in the Warmth of our Community’!!! This astonishing accomplishment would not have been possible… these 219 families / 657 individuals would not have stayed warm…2014 was a very successful year, we raised over $18,000 and were able to help 53 families through a very rough winter! If not for the many caring community members, businesses, and friends that have Walked with us.
Now, in its Sixth year, W4W 2015 promises to be just as successful (if not more so) as its’ previous events. But, this effort would not be possible without the caring participants and donors that have blessed our effort year after year. Won’t you please consider becoming a part of this great cause? And, if you cannot join us for the Walk, won’t you consider making a pledge?
The 6th Annual Walk 4 Warmth was a HUGE Success! We set a goal of $20,000.00 and with the help of some grant money and many many generous donors we were able to meet that goal! We helped 71 families spread over 6 utility companies. We brought back our t-shirts and sweatshirt’s, there are still some available, contact Straits Area Federal Credit Union if you would like to purchase one.
The 7th Annual W4W has changed locations, we had many good years at the Straits Area Youth Center and thank them for their participation! We are partnering with the Fraternal Order of Eagles # 1282 626 N. Main Street for this years event. We are also bring back our soup! We hope that everyone will come out and enjoy a brisk walk in support of those in need…..if you are not able to make it we hope that you will still consider donating to this worthy cause.
